The Gavin Herbert Eye Institute at the University of California, Irvine
The new Gavin Herbert Eye Institute, located on the UC Irvine campus, is a 70,000 SF state-of-the-art facility. The Institute includes an outpatient surgery center, a Lasik refractive surgery center, 34 patient exam rooms, an optical shop, faculty offices and conference spaces.
With the facility being an OSHPD 3 Surgery Center and Clinic space, special care was taken to ensure lighting levels met recommended footcandle requirements. The overall lighting design took careful consideration with respect to visually impaired patients to ensure a safe and comfortable environment.
In order to meet LEED requirements and UCI Standards for energy efficiency, a networked distributed lighting control system was implemented. This system was designed for maximum flexibility and efficiency. Key components include daylight controls for most perimeter spaces and occupancy sensors and vacancy sensors tied into the HVAC system. Exam/Procedure rooms were designed with dimmable lighting fixtures and multiple switch locations to maximize flexibility and controllability for staff during exams/procedures.
