The UC Irvine Medical Center is a 411-bed full-service academic medical center. With plans to add a new 300,000 square foot in-patient tower to the existing 1.2 million square foot hospital, the medical center needed an additional central plant to provide a stand-alone chiller and emergency power to the outpatient services building, diagnostic and testing labs, administrative areas, and all non-acute care buildings. The new central plant's location is at a new second entrance to the medical center, a key factor driving the architectural design.

tk1sc is part of the design-build team providing mechanical, electrical, and plumbing engineering services as the Engineer-of-Record for this $22.8 million project. The scope consists of a new 8,000 square foot building for mechanical and electrical equipment and a 6,000 square foot generator yard. Additionally, the design includes re-feeding essential chilled water, normal and emergency power functions, and several existing campus buildings.

Chilled Water Plant: The design initially includes two 1,000-ton chillers, with the capacity to accommodate two additional 1,000-ton chillers. A new 2,000-ton cooling tower is envisioned to be installed on the roof with accommodations for a second 2,000-ton cooling tower to service future chillers.

Electrical Plant Scope: New 12kV standard and emergency power systems replace significant portions of the current 5kV system. The new 12kV system will include standard and emergency power for several non-OSHPD buildings and the new Non-OSHPD chiller and central power plant. A new ATS ties into the existing ATS, serving this new central plant and the OSHPD central plant. The design includes four 2mW generators, the first going live when the plant comes online, the remaining three to accommodate future electrical loads.

Phasing: The logistics of site demolition, preparation, installing temporary generators and backup generators are extensive. We worked with the entire design-build team, the medical center's facilities team, and critical stakeholders to orchestrate well-times cut-overs and shut-downs.
